When did you begin making original one-of-a-kind dolls and why? After playing around with polymer day and cloth dolls for a bout two years i fell into my current style. I found that i loved tomake interesting and sometimes unconventional characters. I began selling my dolls through ebay in January of 2008.
After holding a completed figure in my hands, i knew i would never be happy leaving my dolls on paper and i have been happily sculpting ever since.
What types/styles of dolls do you make? My dolls can be defined as character dolls, they all have a story to tell through their facial expressions, costumes and body language.
A lot of the time my dolls are considered unusual in that i dont strive for perfection, symmetry and beauty rather i celebrate the many quirks i see in people, to me those imperfections are far more precious and human.
What media(s) do you use?: Cloth, Wire, Polymer Clay, Mixed media
What do you consider to be "special" about your dolls? I consider the flaws and quirks that i emphasize in my dolls to make them special. While many artists strive for perfection i like to creat a more vulnerable character that i feel is more human and i can relate to better.
What are your goals as a doll maker? Like many dollmakers, i dont think there is an end to wha ti can learn. I continue to improve with every doll i make and like to see my progress. I want to explore every facet of my imagination and hone my techniques to be as close to what i envision in my mind as possible.
Most importantly i strive to make a doll that speaks to and stays in the mind of my viewer.
Tell a little about yourself? I am a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design, Illustration program. I have been making dolls (obsessibely) since 2006. I live with my husband, two cats and a dog in Kitchener, Ontario. My husband and i often collaborae on the stories written for many of my dolls.
Aside from sculpting, i enjoy reading, cooking and doodling.
