When/why did you start making dolls? 2004. I saw my first "art doll" in a wool shop in California. I had been painting but my paintings do not sell, no matter how much people rave about them. I decided it was time to switch media. I have always loved fabrics and costume design.
When did you begin making original one-of-a-kind dolls, and why? Although I admire the abstract, free form dolls, I am an incurable realist. My first doll was an attempt at semi abstract but she degenerated into realism. I have always enjoyed historical costume research, so I went in that direction.
What type/style of dolls do you make? Historical figures.
What media(s) do you use? Cloth, polymer clay.
What do you consider to be “special” about your dolls? I research the portraits of the figure in question and try to create a close resemblance in the face. The dolls are 100% handmade from armature on up. All the clothes are as close to authentic as I can manage.
What are your goals as a doll maker? To create realistic portraits of historical ladies in researched and authentic costume.
Tell a little about yourself: I am a retired art teacher who is now an actor as well as a fine artist. My paintings have been displayed in quite a few galleries but none have sold yet. I have attempted 3 dolls so far. |
