When/why did you start making dolls? My adventures in doll making began in 2005 with a trip to a doll retreat at the suggestion of a colleague. I have been making dolls since. And I have even sold a few!
When did you begin making original one-of-a-kind dolls? All my dolls are original, one of kind because all my artwork is original and one of kind. Why would my doll making pursuits be any different?
What type/style of dolls do you make? I like paper dolls that I embellish with whatever I can find around. Incorporating faces from famous paintings make for very whimsical creations. When I am feeling ambitious, I create cloth dolls with movable limbs. Sometimes I attempt cloth faces, but usually I use paper clay or papier mache for the face, hands and feet. If I had to classify my work, I would call it funky, contemporary.
What media(s) do you use? cloth, wire, paper mache, paper clay, mixed media and felting.
What do you consider to be "special" about your dolls? I have a "cheeky" approach to design and I believe my dolls reflect that.
What are your goals as a doll maker? To increase public appreciation of this art form. Whenever I can, I try to display my work publicly. I also try to encourage others who practise this art to charge an appropriate price for their pieces in order to reflect the skill and craftsmanship it requires.
Tell a little about yourself: I am a full-time practising designer/maker living in St. John's, Newfoundland. My bread and butter is the production of individually hand-made papier mache "mummers"---a tradition of masquerade that occurs in Newfoundland during the 12 days of Christmas.
I also create other one of a kind pieces from papier mache that have been exhibited both regionally and nationally.
I live with my best friend and two very bad cats.
